An 18-year-old man has been killed in a road accident in Co Mayo.

The single-vehicle crash happened at Kiltean, Bangor Erris, shortly before 1am.

Gardaí say the young man who died was a passenger in a car which went out of control and left the road.

The driver and three other passengers were injured and are being treated in Castlebar General Hospital.

Nine people were killed during the October Bank Holiday weekend last year.

A special garda operation is underway nationwide and drivers are being warned not to drink and drive and to slow down.

Extra officers are on duty as checkpoints are set up on roads around the country.
