Retailer Musgrave has confirmed that it is to close its distribution depot in Galway with the loss of 143 jobs.

The company hopes that around 55 of the workers will be offered new roles at two of their other operations in Cork and Kilcock.

The decision to reorganise was taken against a backdrop of intense competition in the grocery market.

Musgrave continues to employ over 1,500 people in Cork, Dublin and Kildare, and a further 30,000 indirectly through its network of Super Valu and Centra stores.
