The Government is to establish a special group to look at reducing public-service numbers, the Taoiseach confirmed this afternoon.

The committee will look at expenditure programmes in each Government department, and is scheduled to make recommendations next June on where relevant changes should be made.

It will also examine the possibility reducing the number of staff in appropriate departments, to ensure a return to sustainable public finances.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the proposals would have one key objective.

“The overall objective of the programme is to achieve better value for the citizen,” Mr Cowen said.

“Better value in terms of delivering necessary services; better value in terms of joining up different programmes and agencies to deliver a more coherent and co-ordinated response to the needs of the citizen; Better value in terms of a well managed performance orients and fully accountable public service.”
