The annual strategy to prevent traffic gridlock around Dublin in the run-up to Christmas is swinging into force today.

Operation Freeflow, which is now in its 10th year, is designed to manage and control the increase in traffic during the festive season.

Extra train, bus and tram services are due to be put in place for late-night revellers, while shoppers are being urged to use park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of the city.

An extra 140 newly-graduated gardaí have been drafted in to help prevent traffic gridlock, while all but essential roadworks have been suspended.
