One of Ireland's leading charities says more flexible and responsive public services are critical in tackling poverty.

In its latest annual report today, the Combat Poverty Agency says almost 300,000 people are still living in consistent poverty.

The agency says limited access to quality public services is one of the main contributory factors, particularly for groups including the elderly, carers, lone parents and children.

It says that, while income supports are important, it is also necessary to provide more flexible and responsive services in areas like unemployment, education, housing and childcare.
