Clerical sex abuse insurance details emerge

It has emerged that the Catholic Church has had insurance in place to cover liabilities arising from clerical sexual abuse since 1987.

It has emerged that the Catholic Church has had insurance in place to cover liabilities arising from clerical sexual abuse since 1987.

It is also reported today that a €10.6m fund was established by the Church in 1999 to cover such claims.

The insurance by the Church and General company, which was formed in the early part of the last century by bishops, places a financial limit of just over €250,000 per claim, including legal costs.
