Green blunder costs England victory

Robert Green was guilty of an horrendous error as England were held to a 1-1 draw by the United States in their opening World Cup game in Rustenburg.

The West Ham keeper gifted Clint Dempsey a 40th-minute equaliser when he allowed a shot from the Fulham player to slip from his grasp and over the goal-line.

England skipper Steven Gerrard had given his side a dream opening by netting after only four minutes.

England made the perfect start when Wayne Rooney flicked the ball on to Emile Heskey, who got in front of Jay DeMerit - and his perfectly placed first time pass picked out the run of Gerrard into the box and the Liverpool talisman slotted the ball wide of goalkeeper Tim Howard into the corner of the net.

Bob Bradley's team missed a golden chance to draw level after 18 minutes through Jozy Altidore. Landon Donovan sent over an inviting centre and Altidore got between Ledley King and Glen Johnson but glanced his header wide when he should have at least hit the target.

Milner was the first player booked and, having struggled all week with a virus, was then taken off after half an hour and replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The USA then drew level five minutes before the break after a howler from Green. There appeared to be little danger when Dempsey drilled in a low 25-yard shot which Green got his hands behind but he allowed the ball to slip from his grasp and roll over the goal-line..

Heskey had a great chance to restore England's lead after 51 minutes after Lennon's through-ball split open the USA defence but the striker sent his shot straight at Tim Howard, who made a relatively comfortable save after narrowing the angle.

Altidore then outpaced Carragher and forced Green to parry his shot onto the post from a narrow angle. Rooney started to look more menacing, curling a shot just wide and then teeing up Wright-Phillips whose effort was parried by Howard.

England had a four-two numerical advantage in one counter-attack but Lampard, under pressure from Oguchi Onyewu, saw his shot trickle through to Howard.
