Three die, teenager injured, in 'black day' for Laois community

The community of Rathdowney, Co. Laois, is said to be in shock today after a crash claimed the lives of three people in the early hours of this morning.

The single-vehicle incident happened at around 3am this morning at Middlemount on the road between Rathdowney and Abbeyleix.

The victims are two women aged 20 and 35, and the male driver of the car, who was in his 20's.

A 16-year-old boy who was also in the car is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Tullamore Regional Hospital.

Local Councillor John King says the community will rally to support the victims' families.

He said: "It's a black day for Rathdowney and I just want to take this opportunity to send my sympathies to the three families, and I know the three families very well.

"They are a major loss to their own families and a major loss to the community as a whole. There is nothing that can be said or done at this time, I can only give the family as much support as possible.

"Certainly Rathdowney will not be found wanting in giving the family support and I have no doubt in that."
