Fine Gael has called on the Department of Health to review its structures in an effort to cut back on unnecessary costs.

Party spokesman Olivia Mitchell said the department has already lost millions of euro due to a lack of communication and basic information.

"We only got last Friday, in fact, the waiting list figures for April, May and June, breast-check depends on partial databases from about four different sources.

"We saw doctors and pharmacies overpaid, we saw the number of over-70s was completely miscalculated, which cost an extra €32m.

"We've seen umpteen examples and it's simply because they don't have the information and they need to invest in that and they need to do it urgently," she said.
