Inquiry launched into Mountjoy incident

An inquiry has been launched by the prison service after a homeless mentally ill woman was forcibly removed from Mounjoy in Dublin when she refused to take up early release claiming she had nowhere to go.

An inquiry has been launched by the prison service after a homeless mentally ill woman was forcibly removed from Mountjoy in Dublin when she refused to take up early release claiming she had nowhere to go.

The woman, a chronic drug addict in her 20s, was carried by staff from the facility on to the road outside the prison.

Gardai were called after she attempted to scale the prison gate to get back in. She was taken to Mountjoy Garda station where she spent the night.

Prison staff are said to be traumatised by the incident.
