The Irish anti-war movement has announced details of a countrywide campaign calling on the Government not to allow Shannon Airport to be used in any war against Iraq.

The campaign will include a series of public meetings throughout the country this month, starting in Dublin on September 13.

The IAWM has also called a national demonstration in Dublin on September 28 and a protest at Shannon Airport on October 19.

Richard Boyd-Barrett, the group’s chairman, said: "Bush’s plans to attack Iraq have nothing to do with ridding the world of weapons of mass destruction.

"They have everything to do with the US using weapons of mass destruction to control oil reserves in the Middle East. If Ireland assists the US in this war, they will have the blood of innocent Iraqis on their hands."
