The Knock shrine in Co Mayo was apparently left in an unholy mess at the weekend after thousands of people gathered there for a predicted apparition of the Virgin Mary.

The Knock shrine in Co Mayo was apparently left in an unholy mess at the weekend after thousands of people gathered there for a predicted apparition of the Virgin Mary.

Manager Pat Levelle says the basilica was left 'in a terrible state' after the event, which attracted up to 10,000 people.

He is to discuss safety and organisation issues at the Basilica with the Bishop of Tuam before the next predicted event, on December 5.
