It is feared that the cold snap forecast for the coming days could put the elderly at risk.

Age Action Ireland is warning that now is the time to ensure that elderly people have sufficient fuel and clothing to protect them from the cold weather.

The group recommends that elderly people's rooms be heated to 70F and that they dress in plenty of layers.

The group also said that the elderly should get at least one hot meal a day and exercise regularly, and urged neighbours to check on elderly people who are living alone during the cold spell.

Met Éireann has forecast freezing temperatures until Wednesday, with a likelihood of snow all over the country.
