Tango forgets Paris

Steele Tango was a mere extra at Sea The Stars' swansong in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but bounced back to play the starring role at Newmarket on Friday.

Steele Tango was a mere extra at Sea The Stars' swansong in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but bounced back to play the starring role at Newmarket today.

Victory in the Group Three Thurlow Nunn Standen Darley Stakes was the biggest of trainer Roger Teal's career as his 25-1 shot clawed victory from the jaws of defeat over Glass Harmonium.

Although Steele Tango had finished a tailed off last at Longchamp, he had better form earlier in the season, finishing fifth to Sea The Stars in the Eclipse and running a good second to Tazeez in the Earl Of Sefton at this course back in April.

Epsom-based Teal said: "That was a fantastic performance, and he has really deserved it. What a way to end the year!

"I knew he would come back as that is his main quality and he has a heart as big as a lion.

"Everyone was so disappointed two weeks ago, but he managed to get in the race today.

"There was a Listed race I had in mind for him at the end of the month, but he was so well after the Arc that we had to run him, and he could be over the top in two weeks.

"This isn't his trip but he loves a stiff finish, and we might have a go at the Hong Kong Cup now."

Peter Reynolds, manager of Glass Harmonium's owner Ballymacoll Stud, said: "He ran a super race but he's been a frustrating horse.

"I'm not sure there is another race for him this year, but we haven't seen the back of him yet."

High-rolling owner Harry Findlay steamed into Inler, which explained his starting price of even-money as he made an impressive winning debut in the EBF Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Maiden Stakes.

Trainer John Best said: "It has been a long time waiting. He has had some niggly problems, but he does show us a lot at home and he is right at the top of the two-year-olds I've had.

"I'm not sure he'll run again this season, we'll talk about it first."

Findlay added: "I am lucky to have him the way Tony Bloom and I split the horses up. It was no secret that we had a big bet and there was a lot of emotion invested in him."

Several fillies did no harm to their breeding potential later on the card.

Ryan Moore picked the wrong one in the Lanwades Stud Severals Stakes, opting for the disappointing 9-4 favourite Leocorno, while Jimmy Fortune took advantage on a chance ride aboard the Queen's 12-1 chance Enticement.

Despite a 110-day absence, she repelled Pachattack by a short head.

Her Majesty's representative, Sir Michael Oswald, said: "She showed a lot of guts there.

"They were worried the ground would be a bit fast for her but they took a chance and it worked.

"I wouldn't think she will run again this year and she probably won't stay in training."

Damaniyat Girl (6-1) was revived by a drop in trip in the EBF National Stud Boadicea Fillies' Stakes as she mugged Vitoria close home.

"This is entirely down to the owner and his racing manager Bruce Raymond, who insisted that she ran over six furlongs, and I am delighted to be proved wrong," beamed handler William Haggas.

Raymond added: "William has suggested we either send her to America or Dubai as she likes fast ground."

Richard Hannon still considers Invincible Soul (7-1) to be very weak but was thrilled as he made use of his recent course third in the Anglo Hibernian Bloodstock Insurance EBF Maiden Stakes.

Moore had earlier got the corks popping as Champagne Style (8-1) flew along the far rail in the Sariska Houghton Conditions Stakes for trainer Brian Meehan.

Meehan said: "Ted Durcan felt Lingfield didn't suit him last time and I'm very pleased with that - we think the world of him.

"I'm not sure what we'll do with him now as the owners are not here."

Jim Goldie drove Nanton down ahead of Saturday's Cesarewitch himself and the enthusiasm must have rubbed off on Esoterica as he struck at 25-1 in the Visit The All-New Spreadex.com Handicap.

"That's a wee warm-up for the Cesarewitch," said the Scotsman.

"He loves fast ground and to get it now is a bonus."
