The Tánaiste Michael McDowell says he is satisfied with Bertie Ahern's assurances about his personal finances in the 1990s.

The Tánaiste Michael McDowell says he is satisfied with Bertie Ahern's assurances about his personal finances in the 1990s.

Mr McDowell welcomed the Taoiseach's account of his financial affairs, which appears in today's Sunday Independent.

This time last week, he cast doubt on the Taoiseach's credibility, by calling for a full public statement about his personal finances.

After a week of dodging questions from reporters, the Taoiseach broke his silence today, insisting that all the financial transactions relating to the purchase of his home were proper and ethical.

All eyes turned to the PD leader to see if this would clarify his concerns, and Michael McDowell has now said he is satisfied.

He said he believes Bertie Ahern has given categorical assurances about his affairs and it's no longer an electoral issue.
