Callinan: Banning use of knifes not a practical solution to combat stabbings

The Garda Commissioner said that banning the use of knives is not a practical solution to the spate of stabbings in Dublin.

Two men were stabbed to death in the capital since last Sunday - while there have also been a number of other recent serious assaults.

Martin Callinan is appealing to people to act in a reasonable manner if they get caught up in arguments:

"It would be an impossible situation to ban knifes and sharp objects as we all know," he said.

"So it's a question of people being reasonable in how they conduct their business and our job is to ensure people's safety

"We will continue to work as hard as we can to ensure that is the case."
