Owen in the mix for United

Michael Owen took part in the open session of training this morning, raising the possibility that he could be involved in Manchester United’s Champions League encounter with Valencia at Old Trafford tomorrow night.

The 30-year-old has struggled with injury since pulling a hamstring in last season’s Carling Cup final and has made only seven appearances this season.

Alex Ferguson has suggested Owen was making good progress and that was confirmed at a snowy Carrington when the former England star was part of the group which also included Gary Neville.

Whether Owen starts tomorrow is unlikely, although it is possible he could be on the bench.

However, to have the veteran forward back is useful for the United boss as his team approaches one of the most congested phases of the fixture calendar.

Midfielder Paul Scholes and defender Patrice Evra trained separately and were watched by Ferguson as they went through their paces.

Central defender Jonny Evans was absent, although there was no immediate indication as to the Northern Ireland defender’s problem.

United are already assured of their place in the last 16 and know a single point will be enough to seal top spot in Group C.
