A senior European Union official will today continue his two-day visit to the North in a bid to raise awareness of his role in investigating complaints against institutions in Brussels.
European Ombudsman P Nikiforos Diamandouros is visiting Belfast for a series of meetings with key organisations in the North.
Among the organisations he will meet will be the Equality Commission, the Police Ombudsman and the Community Relations Council.
Mr Diamandouros will also address a seminar at Queen’s University about his role in promoting an open and accountable administration in Brussels.
As he arrived in Belfast he said: “This is the first visit of the European Ombudsman to Northern Ireland.
“I hope that my visit will help raise awareness among citizens, companies and organisations concerning their right to complain to the European Ombudsman about problems they encounter with the EU administration.”
The European Ombudsman is elected by the European Parliament to probe complaints against the EU’s bodies and institutions.
His office has investigated almost 25,000 complaints since the post was created 11 years ago.
