The Labour leader Pat Rabbitte has said that he isn't impressed by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's statement on his personal financial affairs, released this afternoon.

Mr Rabbitte said it should have come sooner in the election campaign.

"As far as I'm concerned," he said, "the Taoiseach's latest contortions about his financial affairs are best dealt with by removing him from office."

"I can understand why people want to pursue it because standards in public office are important, but it is regrettable that the Taoiseach private unorthodox financial affairs has dominated the campaign so far," he lamented.
