The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is urging the National Roads Authority to complete its feasibility study on an outer orbital route for Dublin.
Mr Ahern said there is huge demand for the major new piece of infrastructure in order to ease congestion on commuter roads coming into the city.
The project has not been costed yet but would take several years to complete.
The Taoiseach laughed off suggestions that taxpayers may not be happy with another multi-million euro infrastructure project after the protracted work on the Port Tunnel.
