Minister hails jobs boost

A total of 215 new jobs will be created over the next five years in Co Cork, Employment Minister Micheál Martin said today.

A total of 215 new jobs will be created over the next five years in Co Cork, Employment Minister Micheál Martin said today.

Three existing firms in the county are expanding their operations at two locations in Cork City and at Midleton.

“These three investments are a further endorsement of Cork’s enviable reputation as a location for international companies,” said Mr Martin.

“This reputation is built on Cork’s ability to continually develop the necessary requirements to meet the evolving needs of international companies in an ever-changing and increasingly competitive global marketplace.

“These requirements include a knowledgeable and highly-skilled workforce and an international standard infrastructure of educational, business and physical supports.”

Alcon Inc, a global leader in the ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and surgical devices industries, is investing up to €15.6m for the expansion of its operation at the IDA Ireland Business & Technology Park, at Model Farm Road in Cork City.

This will increase the size of the manufacturing facility and is anticipated to add up to 140 new jobs over five years.

Cascade Designs Inc, which makes recreational and medical products largely for outdoor pursuit and hill-walking, is to expand its European headquarters and manufacturing activities in Midleton, 25km from the city.

It will add 45 new jobs over the next four years.

Siemens Business Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Siemens AG – the largest electronics and engineering company in Europe, is to establish a system management centre at its existing building at Penrose Quay in Cork City.

It will create 30 new jobs over four years.

This investment is separate to the recent announcement by Siemens AG that it is to outsource its own IT services to the Cork operation.

Minister Martin added: “These investments demonstrate a high level of satisfaction by the companies with their existing operations in Cork and a level of comfort that sees them making a further commitment to Ireland as part of their strategy for future success.”

The latest jobs follow a recent announcement that 130 posts were to be created at Ellison in Clonakilty, and Engenio Information Technologies Inc in Cork City.
