The victim, believed to be in his late 20s or 30s, was found by local people on a road close to the church at Donnyloop, near Castlefinn, Co Donegal.

Gardaí sealed off the road - close to the border with Strabane, Co Tyrone - for forensic examination.

Detectives were investigating reports that a silver car may have been involved in the attack some time before 7.30pm last night.

A silver Rover car was found burnt out at Coshquin, very close to the border in Derry.

Gardaí have been in contact with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the state pathologist is expected to carry out a post-mortem examination today.
