The Minister for Health & Children, Mary Harney, today officially opened a new 50-bed rehabilitation centre at Peamount in West Dublin.
The new unit comprises two 25 bed wards, one catering for elderly patients in an age-related unit, and the other providing services for respiratory patients.
The new centre represents the first phase of an ambitious new strategy for Peamount, and its location was formerly the old TB wards at the hospital. Peamount closed down its TB unit more than two years ago, and no longer provides a dedicated specialised TB service.
The cost of the new rehabilitation centre was €4.2m; €2.6 m of this money was provided by the HSE with the balance of €1.6m provided by Peamount. The opening of the new centre also provides an additional 35 nursing and allied health professional posts.
