Primary school children in Ireland are due to take part in a worldwide minute’s silence at midday for the victims of last week’s bloody siege in the Russian town of Beslan.

At least 335 people were killed when Russian soldiers stormed a school where suspected Chechen rebels had been holding around 1,200 adults and children hostage for more than two days.

Thousands of Russians are expected to take part in a mass anti-terrorism demonstration in Moscow this afternoon to express their revulsion at the siege.
