Bruton: Portugal bailout is good for Ireland

Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton has said he believes the situation in Portugal, which is the latest country to formally request financial aid from Europe, will help Ireland's case.

Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton has said he believes the situation in Portugal, which is the latest country to formally request financial aid from Europe, will help Ireland's case.

Mr Bruton said today he doesn't want to take glory in other country's misfortunes but added that developments in Portugal will force Europe to work together instead of taking a "penal approach".

"It broadens the agenda and it's very clear now that Europe has a deeper problem then perhaps some countries are willing to admit," said Mr Bruton.

"It needs a broader base strategy than what we have seen today from Europe.

"So I think, yes this is clearly a development of the scale of the problem and I think it calls for a broader base response from Europe.

"I think it will help us in the long-term."
