Martin tips Cowen to lead FF into next election

A member of the Cabinet, tipped as a contender to replace the Taoiseach in any push, has said Brian Cowen will lead Fianna Fáil into the next election.

A member of the Cabinet, tipped as a contender to replace the Taoiseach in any push, has said Brian Cowen will lead Fianna Fáil into the next election.

Mr Cowen has appealed to his Parliamentary Party to "hold their nerve", adding that recovery in the economy will bring recovery for Fianna Fáil.

Opening his party's think-tank in Galway, the Taoiseach also called for courage and optimism about the country to be shown by everyone.

And Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin is ruling out a heave against the Taoiseach.

Mr Martin said: "I have made it very clear that the Taoiseach Brian Cowen will lead Fianna Fáil into the next General Election.

"He will lead the Government and the country through the present crisis by following the policies that we are pursuing."
