Lisbon Treaty 'critical to Dublin's growth' - Chamber

The Dublin Chamber of Commerce today launched its 'yes' campaign to support the Lisbon Treaty on the grounds that it sees the Treaty as an impotant factor in its goal to sustain Dublin as a high income economy in Europe.

The Dublin Chamber of Commerce today launched its 'yes' campaign to support the Lisbon Treaty on the grounds that it sees the Treaty as an impotant factor in its goal to sustain Dublin as a high income economy in Europe.

The campaign was launched during its business mission to the EU in Brussels, which included meetings with the European Secretary General, Catherine Day, and Commissioners McCreevy and Mandelson.

Dublin Chamber President, Margaret Sweeney, said: "Ireland has had phenomenal success over the past 15 years, and this is in no small way due to its integration within the EU.

"The EU is one of Ireland’s largest single markets and a key gateway for inward investment and jobs. It is critical that the business community supports the EU so that we can continue to sustain our economic growth and position Dublin as 'The Leading Knowledge City' in Europe."

The Dublin Chamber will issue a summary which sets out what the EU has brought to Ireland and how the Treaty may impact on the way Ireland does business.

The document will also summarise key areas of the Treaty including its purpose, democracy, transparency, competence, neutrality, leadership, commission, decision-making, veto, foreign policy, fundamental rights, and social dialogue.

The 'yes' campaign followed a unanimous vote of the Chamber’s governing Council supporting the Treaty.

The documents will also be available for the general public to view at the Chamber’s website www.dublinchamber.ie, along with a supplement guide to the Treaty which goes into greater depth for those who wish more detail.
