Gardaí in Cork have been called to the scene of a disturbance outside the city, which is believed to be connected to the death of a man in a crash on the South Link Road yesterday evening.

Two garda vehicles were following the man's car when he lost control and crashed.

He died at the scene, and his body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out this afternoon.

The man has now been named as 36-year-old William Anthony O'Driscoll from Model Farm Road in Cork.

Gardaí have cordoned off an area on the outskirts of Cork city after being called to the scene of a disturbance at a traveller encampment.

Its understood that earlier today a group smashed a patrol car and the Garda public order unit have been called in to try and quell the situation

The incident is believed to be connected to last night's fatal car chase which resulted in the death of a man in his late 30s.

The man had failed to stop at a garda checkpoint near Watergrasshill and a chase involving up to 3 garda patrol cars ensued.

He later crashed his car on the South Link road and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí won't release the man's name until all his family have been informed and a full investigation into the crash has been launched.
