About 2,500 homes are still without power today, after high winds and lightning storms buffeted parts of the country overnight.

"Our crews are working flat out, especially in the Galway-Mayo area, to restore power," said an ESB spokesman.

About 100 homes in Dublin were also affected. Some 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes in Ringsend when the flooding was at its worst yesterday. All but 20 have now returned to their homes.

Another high tide is expected at 3pm today.

Weather conditions around the country have started to improve, however, with most areas now having bright spells.

Flooding has receded in the worst-affected areas, although parts of the west and south are still experiencing problems. Coastal areas are still at risk of flooding.
