The road haulage industry has warned that transport is set to increase because of a lack of understanding by Governments about the industry during the Celtic Tiger boom.

The Irish Road Hauliers say traffic congestion has reduced productivity by as much as 15% to 30%, yet they insist that road haulage is an essential service in all corners of life.

The industry group also warn that the extra costs that will be included from tolling roads will add to the transport increases in general.

Spokesperson for the group Jimmy Quinn is warning of future transport repercussions.

"The industry is now on its knees. Insurance costs, reduced productivity because of traffic and the proposed tolling of the new motorway network are going to have a major effect for both the national and export markets."

He says that since deregulation, up to 30% of hauliers are operating without a licence and that in 1987, the floodgates were opened in the industry.
