HarperCollins UK has made an offer for the rights for Woody Allen’s yet-unwritten memoirs, a spokeswoman said at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Allen’s agents have been trying to gauge interest in the definitive life story of the film director and actor best known for his neurotic characters.
HarperCollins UK spokeswoman Susana Frayn declined to disclose the publishing house’s offer, but said it was well below the £1.5m (€2.1m) quoted in some newspaper reports.
A deal is conditional on Allen’s approval, she said.
“He is waiting to see the level of interest before committing himself to the book,” Frayn said. “If he would write the book, we would be delighted to publish it.”
Allen, who has played out his neurosis in dozens of films, created a scandal in 1992 when he left his longtime partner Mia Farrow to marry her adopted 21-year-old daughter, Soon-Yi.
He then fought a bitter legal battle with Farrow over custody of their son.
