The Government has asked a leading barrister to review official files on the death of a baby girl whose body was found in Dun Laoghaire 34 years ago.

Senior Counsel Patrick Gageby has been asked to review all the available papers on the death of baby Noleen Murphy to see if there is any basis for a full inquiry into the handling of the death.

Earlier this month, the jury at the inquest into the case said it accepted claims by a 45-year-old woman that she was the mother of the baby, who was stabbed to death and dumped in a laneway.

Cynthia Owen, who came forward with the information a number of years ago, says she gave birth to the girl at the age of 11 after getting pregnant as a result of sexual abuse in the family home in Dalkey.

Ms Owen has called for a full public inquiry into the garda handling of the case.
