Minister for Children Brian Lenihan has extended his sympathy to the families and friends of the missing British schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Police believe that two bodies discovered over the weekend are those of the two 10-year-olds, but confirmation could take many days.

Mr Lenihan said today that he shares the concern of the Irish public about the need for vigilance to protect children.

He said the Department of Justice and the Gardai are currently discussing an extension of the current clearance system for people working with children.
