Brazil provided yet more evidence that they can win the World Cup as they maintained their 100% record on a rollercoaster day for Costa Rica.

Brazil will go into Monday's second-round match against the runners-up of Group H in Kobe in good spirits after taking their goals tally in the tournament to 11.

Costa Rica, though, are heading home after Turkey pipped them for second spot in Group C on goal difference.

It might have been a different story if Costa Rica had not squandered so many chances in the Suwon World Cup stadium, particularly in the first half.

First up was Mauricio Wright, who missed from a free header, and that miss looked all the more costly in the 10th minute when Brazil took the lead.

Edilson broke down the left and stabbed the ball along the six-yard box and although Ronaldo claimed the goal, Luis Marin got the final crucial touch.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 when Ronaldo collected Rivaldo's corner at the near post and turned to shoot home right-footed.

Still the chances came and went for Costa Rica and Wright and Ronald Gomez headed wide.

Brazil once again showed their opponents how it's done on 38 minutes with a goal straight off Copacabana beach.

Junior's cross was deflected up in the air and Edmilson connected with an overhead kick, which gave goalkeeper Erick Lonnis no chance.

Manchester City's Paulo Wanchope gave Costa Rica some hope a minute later when he scored with a shot, which was deflected home off Lucio, after playing a one-two with Wright.

Brazil could have scored again and Rivaldo knocked Ronaldo's inviting centre over the top before he hit a free-kick against the post.

Wanchope then rounded Marcos, but was denied a goal when Anderson Polga cleared his shot off the line.

The goal all of Costa Rica had been praying for came on 56 minutes when Centeno crossed for Gomez to head home.

As things now stood in Suwon and Seoul, it was Costa Rica who would edge through by the narrowest of margins of goals scored.

But the pendulum swung back towards Turkey in the 62nd minute when Rivaldo scored with a sweet left-foot finish into the far corner to make it 4-2.

Two minutes later, Costa Rica's hopes suffered another crushing blow when Junior broke through on the left and lifted the ball over Lonnis and into the net.

The Central Americans might have pulled a goal back when the ball deflected off a Brazilian player and hit the foot of the post.

Substitute Rolando Fonseca then shot narrowly wide and Wanchope hit the bar either side of a Ronaldo shot which came off the post and deflect into Lonnis' arms.
