A former member of the visiting committee at Mountjoy prison in Dublin has described the conditions there as "appalling".
Paul McKay has said infestation, slopping out and prisoners forced to sleep in shower blocks is not acceptable.
And he claims every time he has tried to raise the matter he has been met with "denial, indifference, obviscation and obstruction".
Mr McKay said the Government needs to know what goes behind the walls of the prison in the name of the State.
