Aer Lingus introduces new baggage charges

New charges will be introduced on all checked-in baggage on short haul Aer Lingus flights from tomorrow.

New charges will be introduced on all checked-in baggage on short haul Aer Lingus flights from tomorrow.

A fee of €8 will be levied on every item of luggage checked in before departure.

However passengers will only have to pay €4 if they check in online in advance.

Aer Lingus said the new charges will facilitate quick and easy access through airports and ensure quicker turnaround times.

A maximum baggage weight of up to 20kgs in baggage will be allowed and charged €8 at check-in.

However any excess weight will then be charged at €8 per kg.

Passengers will still be allowed to carry hand luggage into the cabin as long it weighs no more than 6kg.

Ryanair introduced check-in charges for baggage in March 2006.

"Baggage charges are becoming standard in the competitive short haul sector," said an Aer Lingus spokesperson.

"Our new baggage policy will enable the airline to save costs as a result of lower handling fees at airports, and this will be passed on to the passenger in the form of lower fares."
