Airports open as Irish air space clears

The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland continues to move to the west of Ireland after yesterday forcing the closure of most of the country's airports.

Dublin, Waterford, Cork, and Donegal airports were all cleared for operation from 4am, with Shannon, Knock, Galway and Kerry resuming operations on a staggered basis across the morning.

A number of cancellations remain on the boards - down to a mix of diverted aircraft being in the wrong place, and the fact that flights were cancelled because of earlier, more pessimistic predictions.

Ryanair predicts no disruption to its operations at Dublin, Knock and Cork - its Shannon services will resume after 10am.

The airline said it will add extra flights between Ireland and the UK later today to clear the backlog.

Aer Lingus intends to operate the majority of its short-haul services.

But while the ash cloud is moving over the Atlantic, Eufayallayuckul continues to erupt - meaning we are still at the mercy of prevailing winds.
