The DUP is expected to attend a meeting with Sinn Féin at Stormont today to plan a way ahead for power-sharing in the North.
However, it is not thought that party leader Ian Paisley will attend the talks with the Sinn Féin leadership, including its president, Gerry Adams.
The British government had intended this week would see frenetic political activity ahead of the November 24 deadline for restoring devolution.
Instead, although Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness will be nominated in some form on Friday, it will not be the formal occasion intended.
In the weeks ahead, the Programme for Government committee, which meets this morning, will be the forum for continuing talks to try to resolve outstanding disagreements, most notably over policing.
