A Nigerian doctor who claims he is only in Ireland to study has taken the stand in the High Court to protest against being unlawfully detained.

Doctor Grant Oyeye says that he only came to Ireland to complete a Tropical Medicines Diploma course at the Royal College of Surgeons, which he has already paid for.

The 35-year-old says that he fully intends to return to Nigeria in 10 weeks time when he has completed the course.

He was arrested by Gardai at Dublin Airport when they discovered that he only had a one-way ticket and he is being detained at Mountjoy jail.

However, Dr Oyeye says that he was going to buy a ticket back to Nigeria when he had completed the course.
