The United States has killed at least five Afghan civilians in an attack on a Taliban tank unit in the Afghan capital, Kabul today.

According to witnesses, US jets dropped bombs on two houses near the city’s Quilazaman Khan district, killing five people, including four members of one family.

Rescuers are currently digging through the rubble in search of a fifth family member who has been missing since the attack. A 16-year-old girl was also killed today in another US attack on the nearby Microryan housing complex.

The attacks on Kabul began before dawn this morning but they do not appear to be as violent as those of the past two days.

Explosions were heard near the presidential palace and fires were reported around the city’s airport.

Officials from the Taliban Information Ministry said the US has attacked the Shash Tarak district, near the long-abandoned US Embassy and home to a Taliban tank unit. The Defence Ministry and a Taliban garrison are also reportedly located in the region.

Taliban officials also reported attacks on Kandahar in the south and Jalalabad in the east today. US jets reportedly struck military targets in Kandahar, prompting the Taliban to empty its weapons dumps and hand out rifles to civilians.

The airport in Jalalabad was also reportedly hit.
