A man is to be sentenced today for attacking a student on Grafton Street leaving him in need of 41 stitches to his head.
Declan McGowan, living at the North Circular Road, was convicted by a jury of assault causing harm to Thomas Carter on May 29, 2011.
The trial heard Thomas Carter required brain surgery and suffered from bleeding within the skull after being attacked on the night of the Champions League Final in 2011.
He and his friends were at a nightclub after the match and they got a rickshaw to Grafton Street.
Two of his friends ran away before paying which led to an argument between the student and the rickshaw driver.
It was then Declan McGowan, a friend of the driver's “came out of nowhere” and punched Thomas Carter who fell and knocked his head against the ground.
CCTV from several cameras captured the incident.
McGowan was convicted of assault but acquitted on a charge of causing serious harm.
He will be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today.
