The Tánaiste Joan Burton says the Labour Party is on a high alert for a General Election.

Ms Burton says she met with the party's National Executive and General Council over the weekend.

Although the Tánaiste would not be drawn on when she thought the General Election would be, she said the Labour Party is already planning its manifesto.

Ms Burton said: "Well, I had an all-day meeting of the National Executive of the Labour Party and the General Council of the Labour Party on Saturday bringing people from every constituency in Ireland and finalising our preparations in relation to areas like the manifesto.

"So we are certainly on a high level of alert and readiness."
