The Garda Ombudsman is investigating an incident in Drogheda, Co Louth, in which a local man died.
The man, who was wanted by gardaí, is believed to have taken his own life in the early hours of this morning.
It is believed the man was being pursued by gardaí in Drogheda when he fired a number of shots before turning a firearm on himself.
The incident happened at North Strand in the town sometime between 5am and 7am, according to the Ombudsman.
The man was in a car at the time.
Garda Ombudsman investigators are at the scene.
The Garda Ombudsman said it is looking for witnesses who may have seen a silver Hyundai Santa Fe parked on the North Strand between 5am and 7am.
A spokesman said: “The incident has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman by the Garda Commissioner in accordance with Section 102 of the Garda Siochana Act 2005.
“The referral was made to the Garda Ombudsman because there had been some interaction between gardaí and the deceased prior to the discovery of his body.”
