Students honoured for supporting deported friend

Pupils from Palmerstown Community School in Dublin have been honoured for their campaign to secure the return to Ireland of their Nigerian colleague, Olukunle Elukanlo.

Pupils from Palmerstown Community School in Dublin have been honoured for their campaign to secure the return to Ireland of their Nigerian colleague, Olukunle Elukanlo.

The 19-year-old Leaving Cert student was deported to Lagos in March but allowed back to Ireland a few weeks later by Justice Minister Michael McDowell following protests from schoolmates.

The students were presented with a special Judges' Award at the 2005 Metro Éireann Media and Multi-cultural Awards in Cork today.
