Cork designer Joseph Walsh all set to take a bite of the Big Apple

THIS month sees Cork designer-maker Joseph Walsh being honoured in New York by a world leader in contemporary craftsmanship.

Textile designer, author and collector Jack Lenor Larsen will celebrate the work of the Riverstick-based designer at a gala event on Wednesday, February 26.

Larsen’s project LongHouse Reserve will present Walsh with an award in the auditorium of Hearst Tower followed by dinner at the American Irish Historical Society.

Joseph said he has long been an admirer of Jack Lenor Larsen and his project LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden located in East Hampton, NY, featuring pieces from Buckminster Fuller, Yoko Ono and Willem de Kooning to name a few.

"Huge honour"

“This is a huge honour for me as I have long been an admirer of Jack Lenor Larsen, who is world-famous in the design industry, and the extraordinary project that is LongHouse Reserve,” said Walsh.

“The project exemplifies living with art in all forms from its collections, gardens, sculptures and programs that reflect world culture and inspire a creative life.”

Later this year, Joseph Walsh Studio will host the fourth annual edition of Making In on September 12 in Cork.

Making In convenes some of the most profound and exciting voices in international design. It is a creative dialogue on architecture, art, design and craft, an unedited conversation from the point of view of the creator.

Seeking connections

“In a world where people increasingly seek connections to the objects they surround themselves with, and where there is access to global design and new technologies, this seminar seeks to examine our past and debate our future as we mark our place in time with the objects we create and live with,” said Joseph.

The Corkman’s work can be found in many significant international museum and private collections, and recently the Enignum Locus Chair entered the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

He added he was excited at the return of Making In, noting it “puts Joseph Walsh Studio and Ireland at the centre of a valuable creative dialogue — one that aims to stimulate thought, to question, to inspire”.

“As an admirer of the extraordinary work created by each of this year’s speakers, to be announced at a later date, my team and I are delighted to welcome these visionary architects, designers, artists and curators to Cork to share their vision and commitment to creativity and excellence,” he said.
