Soccer: Muscat lied about spitting incident - Pires

Robert Pires has branded Kevin Muscat "a dreamer and a liar".

Robert Pires has branded Kevin Muscat "a dreamer and a liar".

The Australia and Wolves defender accused the Arsenal winger of spitting at him during the fiery 1-1 draw with France in Melbourne.

But Pires has encouraged Muscat to apologise to Christophe Dugarry, who was injured in a tackle by the right-back, and believes the Australian raised the spitting issue to take the heat off himself.

"Muscat is a dreamer and a liar," Pires said.

"I never spat on him and I've never spat on anybody in a game. It's not my style.

"This guy is crazy. He has to be careful.

"If I see Muscat again I'll have a chat to him because what he said wasn't nice. Mark Schwarzer is a nice guy and I can't believe he publicly supported Muscat.

"If I was Muscat, I'd say sorry to Dugarry and then everybody might forgive him."

Pires and Muscat were involved in several run-ins during the game, which boiled over when Dugarry was stretchered off early in the second half.

But the French star added he had enjoyed his time Down Under.

"I was happy to go to Australia but it wasn't long enough for me," he added.

"I'll come back for a holiday for sure.

"I wish Australia good luck against Uruguay and hope we see the Socceroos in Korea and Japan next year."
