Detectives were trying today to piece together the events leading up to the violent death of a middle-aged woman.
The remains of 57-year-old Catherine Smart were discovered around 10am at her apartment in Bailick Court in Midleton, in south-east Co Cork yesterday.
Gardaí immediately sealed off the apartment to allow technical officers carry out an examination of the scene.
Detectives notified the State Pathologist’s office and the body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out by Professor Marie Cassidy.
Although gardaí are not releasing the results for operational reasons, it is understood Ms Smart suffered head injuries.
No arrests have been made and investigating officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Residents spoke of their shock at the discovery in such a close-knit community.
Labour councillor Tom Cashman said the woman was well liked and known around the locality.
He said he first heard of the incident as the town celebrated the Easter parade.
“The whole town is saddened and shocked,” Mr Cashman said.
“I would have known her to see around the town.
“She kept to herself ... but she was a very popular lady in the town, and people are quite stunned.
“Midleton is a quiet town. It’s an awful thing to happen.”
It is understood Ms Smart was originally from Ballyhooly, near Fermoy, in the north of the county.
Hgowever, Mr Cashman said she had been living in the area for many years.
