The president is today meeting Prince Philip at the 50th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards in Scotland.

The head of state will meet Prince Philip with more than 100 recipients of the scheme in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh.

Winners of the Gaisce President’s Award – which is also celebrating its 21st anniversary – will also attend.

Prince Philip, the Queen of England’s husband, paid a reciprocal visit to Dublin last April to mark both anniversaries of the award schemes.

Mary McAleese will also attend a reception this evening to celebrate REEL 2006, the first Scotland-Ireland Film Festival.

The festival, which runs until Thursday, showcases the best of recent Scottish and Irish productions.

The event will also celebrate the 17th Scottish International Storytelling Festival, which features contributions from Irish story-tellers.

President McAleese will be joined by her husband, Dr Martin McAleese, on the visit to Scotland.
