Packages removed from body of man who died on Aer Lingus flight

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that the man who died on board an Aer Lingus flight bound for Dublin yesterday may have been a drugs mule.

A number of suspicious packages were recovered during a post mortem on the body of the 24-year-old Brazilian.

The post mortem was completed at Cork University Hospital this [Monday] afternoon, and a number of packages were removed from the man's body.

These have been sent for forensic testing, and Gardaí investigating his death are also awaiting a toxicology report.

The 24-year-old became highly agitated around an hour in yesterday's flight, had to be restrained, and subsequently had a seizure.

He was pronounced dead after the flight landed in Cork.

Another passenger - a woman in her 40s - remains in Garda custody on suspicion of a drugs offence.

UPDATE (9.30am, Tuesday, October 20): From Newstalk reporter Jonathan Healy: "I understand from garda sources now that that substance has been tested and it turns out it is benign, it isn't drugs, and therefore it isn't actually a crime to have been in possession of it".

"However she remains in garda custody this morning as they continue to investigate what links she may have had to this young man" he added.

The aircraft - which Gardaí had been treating as a crime scene - has since been released back to Aer Lingus.
