Friday's match 'more about us', says Leinster coach

Leinster coach Matt O’Connor says it is irrelevant who his side face in the Pro 12 this week and insists they just need to focus on themselves.

Leinster coach Matt O’Connor says it is irrelevant who his side face in the Pro 12 this week and insists they just need to focus on themselves.

The defending champions bring Cardiff Blues to the RDS on Friday, needing to get back to winning ways after a disappointing two weeks which saw them draw at home against the Ospreys and lose at Glasgow.

To put Friday night in perspective, both sides will come into the ‘D4tress’ with no real momentum after the visitors had to watch Italian outfit Zebre pick up their first ever Pro 12 win against them, however the Leinster coach says his side are focused.

“Friday night is more about us really, it’s about fixing the things that went wrong against Glasgow and put in a performance that meets the standard we set.”

In the loss to Glasgow, Leinster held a good share of possession and had a good attacking line but could not complete the chances that were on offer.

“There were a little bit of detail issues that we didn’t get right in the early part of that game that put us under pressure,” said O’Connor.

“They are a good side Glasgow, they haven’t conceded a try and they will be there or there abouts by the end of the season I reckon so were not overly disappointed by the result, just the performance really.”

Shane Jennings will miss the next few weeks, due to a fractured bone in his right hand while new signing Lote Tuquri who has a tight hamstring is making good progress and should be available soon. Other than that, O’Connor has no major concerns.

“We’re pretty good actually, the Ireland boys were in camp on Sunday and Monday and they have come back well and we had another good training day today again another short week which makes it hard to get things right but they have trained right and they are ready to put in a positive response from a performance than the rest weren’t happy with.”

Luke Fitzgerald looks set to miss yet another week of action as he’s continuing a comeback from a groin injury which plagued most of his season.

He was named in the Leinster starting 15 for the Ospreys game two weeks ago but was pulled out last minute.

O’Connor says “It’s just dragging on a little bit, it’s not a significant issue but we are trying to get to the bottom of it – With those injuries it is an issue that we are trying to get to the bottom of so we can get him back strong.”

This weekend could see a return to action for some of the Lions contingent, Rob Kearney and Cian Healy, both of whom were on the bench for last week’s loss at Glasgow and also Brian O’Driscoll and Jamie Heaslip.

“All the Lions boys will hopefully play a part, we are getting them back to full complement and they are ready to write the wrongs of last week.” Said O’Connor.

There is a certain balance that the Leinster coaching staff are trying to get right as they attempt to welcome back their experienced internationals, however a lack of game/training time since returning from Australia means the likes of O’Driscoll and Heaslip are a little bit behind everyone else.

In Ireland training on Monday, Jamie Heaslip said that he just wanted to get through 20 minutes of a game without having a heart attack, so how does O’Connor strike that balance right?

“It’s very hard, the management structure as it is at the moment is difficult because we found that last week with Cian and Rob, who are world class players, their 3-5 weeks behind the Glasgow guys,” he said.

“That timing and that game intensity takes time to get up to speed with now, the better they are, the quicker they adjust but there is an adjustment period and we try to do everything we can in training to replicate game situations but it’s not the same but we will see on Friday.”
